Chiari Malformation

A chiari malformation is a fairly common disorder that is a distension of cerebellar tonsils. This is the lower section of the brain that is responsible for base functions like motor controls and emotions. North Jersey Brain and Spine Center is a physical therapy and rehabilitation center that is staffed by excellent neurosurgeons who can help to treat a chiari malformation as well as many other brain or spinal disorders. We have a large spacious facility with current technology as well as access to four local hospitals.

Chiari malformation has a wide range of symptoms anywhere from mild to extreme. Some of these symptoms may include:

  • Mild headaches
  • Tinnitus
  • Dizziness
  • Nausea
  • Facial pain
  • Fatigue
  • Intracranial pressure
  • Sleep apnea
  • Complete spinal paralysis

Chiari malformation is caused  by a herniated and distended tonsil. It can be spotted and diagnosed by using an MRI. This will also help us to assess the extent as well as determine the best course of action regarding treatment. The most common treatment is to remove pressure to the back of the neck by surgically removing bone.

If you are suffering from a chiari malformation and would like to schedule an appointment, call North Jersey Brain and Spine Center at 201-342-2550.
